If you own one essential oil, it's this one. Lavender is the most-studied and most-reached-for oil in aromatherapy, and it earns the reputation: soft, herbaceous, faintly sweet, and unmistakable.
Lavender is traditionally used to wind down: in the hour before bed, in a bath, or on a pillow. It's also the most forgiving oil to start with, because it blends with almost everything, from citrus and cedarwood to chamomile and rose.
How to use
- Diffuse — 3 to 5 drops in a diffuser an hour before bed
- Bathe — 5 drops mixed into a carrier oil or unscented bath base, then into the water
- Topically — dilute in a carrier oil and apply to wrists, temples, or the back of the neck
- Linens — a drop on a pillowcase corner, or a few drops on a cotton pad in the dryer
